Abstract

Richard Pococke’s Tour of Scotland (1760) seems to provide a record of a breeding population of lynxes (Lynx lynx) in the mountains near Auchencairn in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. This paper evaluates the authenticity and significance of the record.
